Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics (9709) is organised around Pure Mathematics together with applied routes. For the current 2026–2027 syllabus, A Level Mathematics combines Pure Mathematics with Probability & Statistics, or combines Pure Mathematics with Mechanics and Probability & Statistics. Understanding the route chosen by a school or centre helps a student revise the right ideas in the right relationship.

Understand the route

Pure Mathematics supplies the symbolic and analytical language used throughout the course. Probability and Statistics use that language to describe data, uncertainty and conclusions, while Mechanics uses it to represent motion and forces in mathematical form. Read the route information for your centre carefully and keep separate notes for each area so that a topic is not mistaken for a universal requirement of every route.

Reasoning, modelling and analysis

At this level, a solution should show more than a final value. Identify the quantities, state the relationship being used and explain what the result means. In Mechanics, a model translates a physical situation into mathematical relationships. In Probability and Statistics, analysis depends on reading the data and the question precisely. In Pure Mathematics, algebra, functions and calculus provide structures that can be tested, transformed and interpreted.

Link the parts of the course

Revision becomes stronger when the same idea is seen in more than one setting. Practise algebraic manipulation inside pure questions, then revisit how a rate of change can describe a model or how a function can support an analysis of data. This does not mean mixing every topic into one exercise; it means recognising which mathematical tool is being used and why it is suitable.

A structured revision method

Use a cycle of concept review, worked examples, independent questions and error correction. Keep a route-specific checklist for Pure Mathematics, Mechanics where applicable, and Probability & Statistics. Finish each week with a mixed review that asks you to select a method without a chapter heading. Confirm terminology and route details against the official Cambridge International 9709 information for the 2026–2027 syllabus.
