Who Further Mathematics is suited to
This course suits students who enjoy working beyond routine procedures and are prepared to spend time understanding why a result follows. It is useful to approach each new idea with patience: define the objects involved, identify the assumptions and test the method on a simple case before attempting a more demanding problem. The aim is disciplined mathematical independence, not speed alone.
Proof and mathematical structure
Proof gives structure to advanced mathematics. A good proof states what is known, introduces the necessary definitions, connects each step to a reason and makes the conclusion explicit. When revising Further Pure Mathematics, keep a distinction between an example that suggests a pattern and an argument that establishes it.
